MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD
The mayor and his team are flipping the neoliberal script on Chicago’s establishment political operatives and their donors. Yes, we want efficiencies, yes, we want quality government services, AND yes, we want a fair budget that protects Chicago’s working families and restores basic economic justice by taxing the richest corporations that are enjoying historic tax breaks.
why this budget fight matters
For the past 40 plus years, Chicago’s neoliberal establishment led the shrinking of public sector, closing schools and clinics, outsourcing core functions to private companies, in the name of efficiencies that never materialized. Instead, we, the taxpayers are stuck with the ever increasing fees and taxes, while the richest corporations are getting historic tax breaks. Corporate caucus alders who claim to care about the efficiencies, and keep voting against marginal tax increase on the richest corporations, can’t actually demonstrate where those efficiencies would come from without investing in modernization of city operations, which would require funding to come from raising even more additional revenue!!!
what are our options?
Mayor Johnson’s Protecting Chicago budget makes it clear that city council and frankly, Springfield, have two options: Tax The Rich to make Chicago affordable, or declare war on the affordability agenda in order to protect the richest individuals and corporations. Progressive coalition of Chicago is committed to fighting for taxes on the richest corporations to fund affordability, community investments in public health and safety, and restoring basic dignity to our communities. This budget crisis is artificially created by corporate greed and misplaced priorities of some of our alders. We must show up to insist that our city council and Springfield prioritize people over profits!
